TALKING CARS & SIPPING RUM: BROOK JAMES

They say you should always trust your gut, and my gut was telling me I was in for a little treat when @brookjames_ sent me a couple of photos of his ’69 Volkswagen Type 3 Fastback agreeing to do a shoot and drink some rum.⁣

“Make sure you shoot its burnt side,” Brook laughs as we line up, ‘Fasty’ (the name he gives his VW) under the Bolte Bridge. The previous owner had lent the car out to his nephew and the hose split causing the whole thing to go up in flames. The VW was a burnt out mess when Brook bought it close to three years ago, taking a year to fix the interior and underneath. Brook decided to leave the charming bit of destruction on the right side of the car as heritage to the car’s story.⁣

Brook doesn’t see himself as technically mechanical but has a few other members of the ‘tyre family’ in the shed and will give any challenge a crack to get his collection up and running, even when things go wrong out on the road.⁣

You’ve more than likely spotted one of Brook’s gems around Melbourne’s north side. From his 1991 Volvo 240 or 1988 Range Rover Classic to his other loveable VWs being a MK1 Golf Cabby and a 1988 T3 Kombi Camper.⁣

Photographer by trade, Brook also shoots for pleasure the things he loves while out adventuring. Nothing staged, nothing faked. Just Brook and his mates out somewhere fresh most weekends, living their best lives and documenting the best bits. This time, I had the privilege of turning the camera onto him.⁣
