TALKING CARS & SIPPING RUM: ROD NORTH

This one was worth the drive. Last weekend I escaped the big smoke to the farming township of Shepparton, to catch up with @rod_north and take his car for a spin, the 1957 air cooled, Porsche 356a.⁣

Two years ago Rod’s treasure hunt came to an end. He and a group of his friends were looking all over the USA and Australia to find a 356a model Porsche for sale. He lucked out and picked one up in Adelaide’s finest - the Barossa Valley. ⁣

Rod’s jet-black beauty has matching numbers from engine, gear box and even its doors. All Rod needed to do was put the badge back on and get the interior back to its pristine late 50s condition.⁣

“You can’t find the ‘a’s’ anywhere”, smiles Rod as he goes onto describe the cult features and details that have been swapped and added since the first Porsche’s 356 pre-a. Looking past these details, it’s clear there’s not a bad line on this car. And Rod agrees, “any air-cooled Porsche is pretty cool”.⁣

Rod’s son and my mate, Dakota took me for a drive once I arrived at the airport hanger. For such a simple and old car I was surprised at how quiet she was. Design and comfort were clearly at the centre of mind when it came this gem. I hadn’t been this excited to be a 4cyl car since I got my licence - just this time I was doing it in style.⁣

Rod North works the quarry by day and fixes, restores and polishes his mechanical dreams by night. Looking forward to seeing more bikes and cars come from the North Bros Workshop.⁣

While cruising in classics is cool and knocking back Kraken Spiced Rum is delicious, we didn’t mix the two and encourage each to be enjoyed individually.⁣
